Hans Berliner
(1929- )

Hans Berliner was the first US citizen to win the World Correspondence Chess Championship (the 5th, 1965-1968) and the first US correspondence grandmaster. He finished a full three points ahead of his nearest rival—a record likely to endure. Born in Berlin, he came to the US at the age of eight. He won the New York State championship and played at the 1952 Helsinki Olympiad. Dr. Berliner's work with computer chess at Carnegie Mellon University has attracted worldwide
attention. His Hitech computer program was one of the first consistently to defeat master-strength human players.
